Ft. Myers FL. – During Charley’s rampage, Diplomat Middle School became a key regional safe haven. When the evacuation order was issued an estimated 3,500 people arrived from towns like North Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Lee County experienced winds of up to 140 miles/hour and was one of the hardest hit areas, suffering severe power outages, leaving thousands homeless and causing sewer lift station failure countywide. Diplomat Middle School had major lift station failure and as a result the toilets in the school overflowed causing raw sewage to flood areas adjacent to the bathroom facilities. On the heels of Charley’s farewell bid the cleanup began and Lee County School District embarked on a cleaning and sanitizing campaign within the school’s many affected areas.
Southwest Florida’s FreshAire Solutions and Tampa-based BBJ Environmental Solutions Inc. were ready for the mission. Using BBJ Mold & Mildew Remediation Concentrate™ to initiate the carpet cleanup, the entire school was then treated with BBJ Microbiocide™ for floors and walls. BBJ’s Microbiocide is an antimicrobial product used to inhibit microbial growth for up to 2 years. Diplomat Middle School evaluates the cleaning and sanitizing effectiveness by measuring the presence of microorganisms on cleaned surfaces.
According to the Indoor Air Quality Coordinator Joseph Murphy of the Lee County School’s Plant Management Department, the results indicate that the cleaning procedure employed by BBJ Environmental Solutions and FreshAire Solutions were very effective in “rapidly and efficiently restoring the areas back to acceptable and above levels for normal living and eating standards”. BBJ Environmental Solutions and FreshAire will continue to monitor the area for the county to ensure there will be no future contamination at Diplomat Middle School.
