BBJ Environmental Technologies Reports on the Health Benefits of Preventative Maintenance
Tampa, July 12, 2002
BBJ Environmental Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: BBJE.OB - news) issued a report maintaining that a clean indoor environment is the most important variable impacting health. It is critical to routinely clean and maintain the HVAC/R system to prevent the buildup of organic material on the cooling coils and other moist areas of the system. If a small concentration of bacteria manages to reach this area, they can feed on the organic material (food source) and amplify to a greater concentration.
BBJ's central mission is to develop products and technologies that minimize the possibility of microbiological growth in indoor environments. Preventing microbial growth as opposed to destroying already established microbial growth is important for several reasons:
- The destruction of already established microbial growth requires powerful formulations that are often highly toxic and may pose a greater risk than the organisms they are attempting to destroy. Prevention of microbial growth can be accomplished using mild formulations that pose little if any risk.
- Once a colony of growing organisms is established and identified, occupants of the space are already at risk. A prevention strategy assures that occupants will never be at risk.
- Even after a growing colony is destroyer, it remains present in the form of cellular debris.
BBJ's growth prevention strategy centers around mild cleaners that remove organic material that can serve as a food source for eventual microbial growth, affordable and safe cleaning techniques utilized on a periodic basis coupled with use of low toxicity antimicrobial products that are applied to surfaces to make them unfriendly to microbial growth. Bob Baker, Chairman and CEO stated, "Such a proactive approach is needed because there is no way to predict the conditions under which microbiological growth is most likely to occur. Relative humidity in excess of 65% is often stated as a danger level above which microbial growth is almost certain to take place. However, we believe microbial growth is possible at virtually any level of relative humidity and under any climatic condition."
Mr. Baker added, "Mold (more accurately "fungi" of which mold is only one example) can use almost anything as food. They thrive on a wide variety of surfaces so it is difficult if not impossible to totally control microbiological growth by depriving them of food. One strategy is to chemically alter or protect surfaces so they are less friendly to microbial growth. There are products such a BBJ MicroBiocide that will provide such protection. In addition, new research indicates that the total level of organisms present is more important than what organisms are present. This supports the position we have taken all along and demonstrates the importance of a "broad spectrum" antimicrobial product such a BBJ MicroBiocide.
As reported in Cleaning & Maintenance Management ("C&M"), "Total fungal concentrations are likely to be a much more significant human health issue than the presence of any certain species. That is the conclusion of researchers who studied more than 1,700 US buildings over a three-year period - the largest such study ever completed. That may make the phrase "toxic mold" obsolete and change the way we think about indoor air quality."
"The results raise questions to claims out there that certain toxigenic fungi are a particular hazard," stated Brian Shelton, MPH, of PathCon Laboratories. "It seems that total concentrations, more than any particular species, are significant." Shelton co-authored the report of the study with W. Dana Flanders, DSc, MD, professor and associate program director of epidemiology, with the Emory University Medical School in Atlanta.
