Air Flow Improvements Continue to be Realized

The amount of air that flows through an air-handler in an HVAC system is directly related to the level of soil and other contamination. Microbial contamination, in the form of mold and bacteria, fouls the cooling coils, making it more difficult and costly from an energy use standpoint to push air through the system. As the level of microbial contamination is reduced, the air flows through the system at higher rates and heat transfer is more efficient.

BBJ technicians measured the air flow of two air handling units in a large office building. Measurements were recorded before the system was cleaned, after the cleaning was complete, and monthly for the next 90 days. As the chart below indicates, air flow continued to improve over the entire 90 day period.

BBJ MicroBiocide for HVAC systems had a residual effect on the ventilation system of this building that essentially made the cooling coils “self cleaning”. By continuing to reduce the microbial growth within air handlers, there is also less likelihood of contamination being distributed into the occupied space of the building. The improved air flow will result in even higher energy savings!
